Irony on The Simpsons

This is a follow-up to a recent post about irony, in which I asked readers to send in examples of irony.

Christian came through by sending in a great example of situational irony from The Simpsons. In situational irony, the intended message and the actual message are opposites. In this clip, Homer boasts about being smart while doing something incredibly dumb.

  1. I guess I'm just "snarkier". Consider if Homer was human. The situation and man should not effect the definition of irony. Is a clearly dumb man calling himself smart and lighting on fire his diploma causing widespread damage irony? Nope. He was just misleading himself, or perhaps acting like a psychopath.
